Strategic Eradication Plan — New Jersey
New Jersey Activities by Year: Timeline
2002: ALB detected in Jersey City.
2004: ALB detected in Carteret, New Jersey.
2004: ALB detected in Carteret and the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township.
2005: Jersey City and Hoboken, in Hudson County, quarantine removed; area remains under survey.
2006: ALB detected in another area in Middlesex/Union County. Quarantine area is expanded to 20 square miles.
2006: New Jersey is treating 27,589 Trees.
Deregulation and Eradication Declarations
As noted above, the Hoboken/Jersey City was deregulated in 2005, after two years of survey with no indication of beetle presence. Because deregulation is different than complete eradication, the area continues to be surveyed for signs of ALB.
Any beetle population that might be present at this time would pose a minimal risk of artificial spread. Beetle presence is measured by whether two successive annual core (Level 1) and delimiting surveys (Level 2) have been completed throughout the regulated area with no active signs of or the presence of ALB. Eradication from an area can be declared when four successive annual core and delimiting surveys have been completed and are negative for active signs or the presence of ALB.
Treatments
Approximately 893 trees were treated with Imidacloprid in the Hoboken/Jersey City area in 2005. Approximately 21,143 trees were treated in Middlesex/Union County in 2005.
Quarantine Zones
The quarantine area in New Jersey now encompasses a 20-square-mile area including the borough of Carteret, the Avenel section of Woodbridge Township in Middlesex County, and portions of the cities of Rahway and Linden in Union County.
Project Cooperators
Partners in eradication include the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s Division of Plant Industry, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Forests and Parks, Rutgers University Cooperative Research and Extension Service, the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, the USDA Forest Service, and APHIS.
